If you can't afford a custom made wedding dress, buy an off the peg one, make sure it is not a snug fit, then take it to a professional who will alter it to fit you exactly. You could also add some additional details to it.
Having problems with budgeting? Get a credit card with 0% on purchases for three months or more if you can find one, that way you may be able to afford a couple of extras. Make sure that you will be able to make reasonable repayments so that it is paid off before the interest starts.
Don't forget that a wedding day involves family as well as friends. For some family members this may be the first gay event they have attended, make sure that they feel as welcome and as comfortable as their prejudices allow.
There are no traditions set for a gay wedding yet, you may wish to follow along the lines of a straight one or you can invent your own. If you create your own, write a list of the events and what is happening so that everybody will know what is happening.
If you have a lot of friends or family members abroad or far away, set up a Flickr or Photobucket account where you can upload and share your wedding photos. If you have hired a professional photographer, add the link so that they can buy prints from them.
If your wedding is not to take place for a year or so, you can use the time to try out different hair styles, remembering that if you decide for the longer option, you have enough time to grow it back.
A themed wedding day can be great fun but it is very easy to go over budget trying to get everything just right. When planning, on your list of items, place a code against each, (1,2,3 or A,B,C) where 1 is vital, 2 is important and 3 is needed but expendable. That way if your budget needs to be trimmed, you can see at a glance, which can be dropped.
When buying shoes to match your wedding dress, look for something that could be used after the big day, which means that any wedding type adornments can be easily removed and that they could be dyed to a colour of your choice.
With the invention of the i-pod, you can put together your own music for your wedding reception so that you will not need to keep changing discs. You could, perhaps set up the first hour then put it onto random. You will need to check with the wedding venue that you can hook up your MP3 player to the sound system.
The wedding day needs a lot of planning, set up a spread sheet and get a folder. You use the spread sheet to keep track of everything you have done and what you have to do. Keep all your letters, estimates and receipts in your folder. Set up an alarm diary on your computer to remind you of things you need to do.
Once you have your guest list and wedding venue arranged, find a reasonable hotel, near to your venue that will accept a group booking. That way your guests will not have to pay full price for their stay.
Make sure that everything is in place a week before the wedding, that way you can feel relaxed in the days leading up to the big day. Then, you only need to do a quick ring around to your suppliers and wedding venue for a last minute check.
Supplying drink to your guests is often quite expensive. Try creating a delicious punch that will make your drink go further. If you are having a themed wedding, it could reflect that theme. Remember to supply a non-alcoholic one for the children and designated drivers and label them accordingly.
Prepare a checklist before visiting venues, this will save time and energy and ensure that your main requirements are met.
Make your own wedding items, whether that's the cake, invitations, table decorations or the basket for the flower girl. If you haven't ever registered on eBay, now is it the time. It's a great place to find so many of your wedding needs at a fraction of the cost, like shoes, tulle, tiara etc....
When trying on potential wedding gowns, take a digital camera and have a friend take photos of you from the front, back and sides. How you see yourself in the mirror, and how you look in the photos, can be really different.!
In the last six months before the wedding, send a weekly email to your key people listing what tasks need to be done that week and who is responsible, and name and shame anyone who misses a deadline!
