When it comes to the speeches at a gay wedding, anything goes because the traditional roles from a straight wedding don't really work.

They start the wedding speeche just after the meal with the father of the bride going first. The groom then responds and is followed by the best man. Even straight weddings have modified this as everybody wants to pitch in with a speech.

You will need to discuss with your partner how to handle this, which parent goes first, which of you will respond first and will you have two best man or maid of honour speeches. Remember that there is usually a toast after each speech so make sure there is plenty of bubbly on hand.
As there will be a mixture of straight and gays, you may wish to do your wedding speeches before you sit down to eat, that way you can introduce yourselves and how you met, how you came out and when and why you decided to have a civil partnership. It will help the straight relatives understand  the how's and whys of your relationship. You can then really enjoy your meal, without worrying about having to make a speech at the end.

When it comes to the content of your wedding speech, keep the length between five and ten minutes erring on the side of five minutes.  Don't try to cram in too many jokes and take care not to offend. If you are not a natural speaker, write your speech a week or so before the wedding, you can find some excellent ideas on the web, and practice it so that you will have a smooth delivery. If you think you will need some help, nerves can have a terrible effect on the memory, put the main points down on cards which are much handier to refer to.

The gay wedding speeches tradition has yet to be written, you can start the trend.
