Was it Napoleon or Zsa Zsa Gabor who said a wedding marches on its stomach? Who cares, but this is one area that you have to get right because you don't want your wedding day associated with a bad experience due to bad wedding catering services. Do you remember when so and so got married? God yes I can still taste that rancid squid pate. Horrors. Your gay wedding catering must be the best you can afford.

The time of your ceremony may have some bearing on how much and when you feed your guests, if you chose an afternoon time, you can avoid having to provide lunch and dinner which will certainly help your budget.

The venue may well dictate your choice of catering services. If you hold your wedding in a hotel, they may insist you use their own in-house services and listed buildings may also insist on you picking one from their trusted list.

You first have to decide if it will be a sit down or buffet meal. If you are having a party in the evening you will probably want a sit down for the reception and a buffet for the party.

The wedding caterer will probably already have a set of  menus at a per head price. These shouldn't be rigid, a good one will have at least two or three options per course plus vegetarian/vegan/kosher/halal/dairy intolerant/wheat intolerant/food intolerant,( for the super models) options should you need it.

Find out if there are any extras that may be charged, such as waiting staff, linen, plates, cutlery, glasses.

As well as providing food, you may find that your caterer can supply a bar as well. The trouble with providing a free bar is that it cannot be fully budgeted for. Imagine if one friend turns up with his rugby team mates what a hole that will put in your wedding  budget.
If you are having a small party, you may like to think about having your wedding reception at a restaurant where you can plan the menu and drinks in advance.

Good wedding catering people will offer you a tasting session, take along a friend whose taste you trust so you know that you'll be getting something worth eating.

If you are on a tight budget, you may want to go the self catering route although having spent a couple of weeks in the kitchen before my own, I wouldn't recommend it. If you trust your friends cooking you wish to get them to bring some dishes but find out their choices as you don't want to end up on the day with a table full of Quiche Lorraine.

Drink also plays an important part of any wedding celebration from the greeting Sherry to the last shot that is forced down before falling over. Your caterer may be able to help you with this especially for the wine that accompanies the meal. Otherwise you will have to set up your own bar which means glass hire and arranging for optics, ice buckets, corkscrews and the like. You will have to arrange for some fizz for the toasts and a selection of soft drinks for the children, tea-totalers and designated drivers. To save money, you may wish to do a booze run to France.

A lot of venues may have their own bar, in which case you need to have a look at their tariff and decide if you want to put a certain amount behind the bar and let your guests pay for their own when that has run out. This needs to be judged quite carefully as the line between skin flint and good egg is a mighty fine one.

Gay wedding catering is always a little more difficult than other catering services because the customers are always more discerning.
